These are my twin boys, Jesus and Dante, who were born at just 26 weeks, each weighing only one pound. From the very beginning, they faced countless challenges that come with being born prematurely, in addition to having Down syndrome.
I remember sitting in the hospital, speaking with NICU specialists about what to expect and what challenges might lie ahead. But the truth is, nothing can ever truly prepare you for a journey like this.
One moment that will forever stay with me was hearing the doctors explain that Dante had only a 50% chance of survival, while Jesus had a 70% chance. Those are words no parent is ever prepared to hear.
A few months after they were born, Jesus underwent his first open-heart surgery at Memorial Hermann Children's Hospital. Thanks to the incredible doctors and nurses who cared for him, he was able to recover. Both boys also required G-tubes due to feeding difficulties.
In November 2024, Dante and Jesus were finally able to come home from the hospital. It felt like we had overcome the biggest challenge of our lives. Little did we know, an entirely new chapter was just beginning. Adjusting to life at home came with its own struggles, but thankfully, we found the strength to overcome those challenges together.
Then, in the summer of 2025, Dante underwent his first open-heart surgery. Once again, it felt as though we were back at square one. However, this time, we experienced an incredibly beautiful healing journey. To our amazement, Dante was able to come home just two days after surgery.
I could sit here and share a hundred more challenges our family has faced along the way. There have been moments of fear, uncertainty, exhaustion, and countless prayers for our boys.
"The purpose of this journey was never for life to become easier. It was for us to grow stronger."
It was about growing as individuals and as a family. It was about learning to stand together when the future was uncertain, finding strength in the most difficult moments, and discovering just how powerful love and perseverance can be.
Our journey has not been easy, and we know there may still be challenges ahead. But Jesus and Dante have taught us lessons that we will carry for the rest of our lives.
Down syndrome has not defined our family's limitations. Instead, it has taught us the true meaning of strength, unconditional love, resilience, and togetherness.
